Begin with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, a beautiful stupa dedicated to world peace, built in memory of the Third King. Continue your cultural journey to the 12th-century Changangkha Temple and Drubthob Monastery, home to the Zilukha Nunnery. Other must-see sites include the School for Arts and Crafts, the National Library housing ancient scriptures, and the Traditional Paper Factory showcasing Bhutanese craftsmanship. Today, explore Trongsa Dzong, a magnificent structure steeped in history, followed by a visit to the Ta Dzong Museum, which houses artifacts related to the Royal Family. Afterward, continue your journey to Bumthang (2.5 hours), often considered the spiritual heart of Bhutan. Upon arrival, visit Jakar Dzong (the Dzong of the White Bird) and the 16th-century Tamshing Lhakhang, known for its exquisite wall paintings. After lunch, explore the sacred Kurje Lhakhang and the ancient Jambay Lhakhang. Spend the night at your hotel in Bumthang.

Today marks the start of your trek as you head toward Ngang Lhakhang (4 hours). The trail winds alongside the Chamkhar Chu river, passing through lush meadows and vibrant blue pine forests. Encounter charming villages and sacred temples along the way, immersing yourself in the local culture. Overnight at a traditional farmhouse, where you can savor local cuisine. 

Prepare for a rewarding day of trekking as you ascend towards Phephe La Pass (3360m). The path gradually climbs through fragrant juniper forests before descending into the picturesque Tang Valley, arriving at Ugyencholing village (2850m) after a fulfilling 7 to 8 hours on the trail. Overnight at a cozy guesthouse, enjoying the tranquil ambiance of the area.

In the morning, visit the beautiful Tang Ugyencholing Palace, a private mansion that showcases the essence of traditional rural life through its small museum. On your return journey to Bumthang, stop at Mebartso (the Lake of Fire), a sacred site steeped in legend, where Guru Rimpoche is believed to have hidden treasures. After breakfast, depart for Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan. Upon arrival, take a leisurely stroll through the charming township and soak in the scenic views. Overnight at your hotel in Punakha.

Begin your day by visiting Punakha Dzong, an architectural marvel located at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu rivers. This grand fortress, built in 1637, serves as the winter residence for monks and is known for its intricately designed temples. Afterward, head back to Thimphu for some last-minute shopping at handicraft stores before returning to Paro for the night.

After breakfast, embark on a hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), perched dramatically on a cliff 900 meters above the valley floor. This spiritual site is a significant pilgrimage destination, believed to be where Guru Rimpoche meditated in the 8th century. Enjoy breathtaking views and perhaps stop at a teahouse for refreshments. In the afternoon, explore the partially reconstructed Drukgyel Dzong, a historic monument that commemorates Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invasions. On your way back, visit other attractions in Paro.
